Around 700 students and workers joined a demonstration on Wednesday of last week against proposals to close up to eight departments at the University of Liverpool.

Reports had leaked out towards the end of last week that the vice-chancellor was considering the closure of the philosophy, politics and communication, and statistics departments – and that five further departments might be up for closure.

There was real anger and disbelief at the extent of the proposed cuts and there will be further campaign meetings next week. The UCU union is considering strike action.
