New dossier on Israel’s crimes in Gaza

Issue No. 2144

Evidence is mounting of the scale of Israel’s war crimes against the people of Gaza during its recent offensive.

According to a dossier prepared by the Guardian newspaper, Israeli troops used three brothers, including a 14 year old boy, as human shields to deter Palestinian resistance fighters from firing at tanks.

Troops also used civilians to shield themselves when they entered Palestinian homes and buildings.

Any subsequent deaths were blamed on resistance fighters who Israel continues to claim were “hiding behind civilians”.

Human rights organisations and the United Nations have already gathered evidence on the use of white phosphorous, “flechette” ammunition and other banned weapons.

But the latest allegations come as Israeli troops have begun to speak out about the scale and cruelty of their war on ordinary people.

Vandalising

According to the Israeli Haaretz newspaper, soldiers told of deliberately killing women and children, defecating in houses and vandalising Palestinian property – including scrawling racist messages on the walls of homes.

Their superior officers ordered them to do this.

One junior officer explained, “To write ‘Death to the Arabs’ on the walls, to take family pictures and spit on them, just because you can. I think this is the main thing.

“To understand how much the Israeli army has fallen in the realm of ethics, really, it’s what I’ll remember the most.”

In other shocking cases, Israeli soldiers wore T- shirts depicting an image of a pregnant Palestinian woman in the crosshairs of a rifle, with the words “1 Shot 2 Kills”.

Another T-shirt depicted a child with the words, “The smaller they are, the harder it is.”

Despite the global outcry over this unrepentant racism and cruelty one columnist in a “liberal” Israeli newspaper declared he was comfortable with “the racist Israeli fascist in me”.
