Firefighters in the FBU union in Humberside and South Yorkshire are holding ballots for industrial action short of a strike in two separate disputes over imposed changes to work patterns.
Fire service managers on Humberside are trying to push through changes that bypass national agreements, such as introducing a 'community fire technician' grade on lower pay.
Meanwhile in South Yorkshire, managers are trying to impose shift changes that would see the day shift change from nine hours to 12 hours. Work would start at 8am and end at 8pm.
Jerry Pagan from South Yorkshire FBU said the changes would play havoc with childcare arrangements. He said, 'No fire authority has ever imposed 12 hours shifts on its firefighters.'
