London Metropolitan unions set to meet management for talks

Issue No. 2145

The staff unions at London Metropolitan University were set to meet with management as Socialist Worker went to press.

They are expected to tell management to immediately back down from plans to axe hundreds of jobs, or face a ballot for industrial action. The unions are currently in the middle of a 90-day consultation process.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that management plan to push ahead with the cuts and are using the talks to string the unions along in the hope of ensuring they don't initiate a strike ballot until the end of the talks in mid-May.

This would minimise the impact of any action as it would delay it until the summer break. Unions need to build a serious fight against the cuts.
