Flat taken over to protest at home sell-offs

Issue No. 2146

Defend Council Housing (DCH) activists occupied a flat in Streatham, south London, last week in protest at Lambeth council’s policy of selling off its housing stock despite the chronic shortage of accommodation in the borough.

Police evicted the campaigners later on the

same day.

The activists continued their fight with demonstrations outside the flat last Saturday and at the housing auction where the flat was due to be sold on Monday of this week.

Steve Hack from Lambeth DCH told Socialist Worker, “Why is the council selling flats at a time when more and more people are facing homelessness through repossessions and redundancy?

“There are already 17,000 people on Lambeth’s housing waiting list and almost 2,000 people in temporary accommodation.

“Two thirds of those need a two-bedroom home – just like this one that is being sold off.”
