Firefighters reject shift rota changes

South Yorkshire Fire Brigades Union (FBU) members voted by three to one in a ballot last week to resist proposals by management to change their shift rotas.

The new rotas were due to start on bank holiday Monday but – following the decisive vote – bosses have agreed to suspend implementation while negotiations take place.

In the weeks running up to the ballot, management had launched an attack on the FBU.

At a mass meeting on Thursday of last week FBU general secretary Matt Wrack told 200 firefighters that their vote had brought management to the negotiating table. He said, “We have already won the first battle, but the war goes on.”
