ID pilot scheme protest

Issue No. 2150

These are turbulent times for the government’s deeply unpopular national ID card scheme.

New Labour wants everyone to carry a biometric ID card which will be linked to a national database holding detailed private information.

However, pilots at Manchester and London City airports are refusing to be guinea pigs.

The ID card is supposed to be voluntary. But the pilots have been given an ultimatum – no card means no “air side pass”, and no job.

We can only hope the government takes flight and the protest proves terminal for the £5 billion ID cards project.
