The PCS civil service workers’ union national executive elections saw members of the left and centre-left Democracy Alliance group overwhelmingly re-elected.
Socialist Worker supporters Sue Bond, Andy Reid and Paul Williams were all re-elected. Only one right winger grabbed a seat on the national executive.
The PCS has played a leading role in creating public sector unity over pensions and pay. This will be even more important as the recession continues to bite.
However, the low turnout and close results in the elections for assistant general secretary and deputy general secretary are a warning to the union leadership.
Failure to follow through on pay action at the end of 2008 clearly dented the enthusiasm and confidence of members.
