Sports plan fails to score

Issue No. 2152

The launch of a bid for the 2018 football World Cup this week saw Gordon Brown attempt to ease his worries by hanging out with David Beckham and Wayne Rooney.

Brown also wants England to host the 2015 rugby World Cup, on top of the lumbering £9 billion white elephant that is the 2012 London Olympics Games.

Brown says that all these events will make up “the greatest sporting decade our country has ever seen”.

But the government was forced to put another £324 million into the construction of the Olympic Village last week after a private finance initiative deal collapsed.

And even if the country gets to host the World Cup, England is bound to get knocked out of the quarter finals on penalties anyway.
