Teachers at five schools in Tamworth, Staffordshire, struck on Wednesday of last week against a planned academy in the area.

The academy would run a new sixth form centre – which would mean the closure of four existing sixth forms in the town. Teachers argue that the academy would damage the quality of education provided.

Strikes took place at Belgrave High School, Queen Elizabeth Mercian School, Rawlett Community Sports College, Wilnecote High School and Woodhouse School.

NUT union members were out on strike in all five schools, while NASUWT union members joined them in four.
