Bus workers must beat tendering

Issue No. 2154

Bus workers at London’s biggest garage, Westbourne Park in west London, are facing job cuts.

One Unite union member told Socialist Worker, “There are several jobs under threat among engineers and supervisory staff. We are in talks over how to fight this.”

Meanwhile around 150 drivers’ jobs at the garage are under threat after First lost two major bus routes to other operators.

A driver said, “This shows what is wrong with the tendering system. Our lives are thrown into chaos because companies are competing to cut costs.

“The drivers on these routes do not want to go to another garage.”

Westbourne Park was at the centre of strike action last year—with militant mass pickets.

If the union fights back, the garage could once again be at the centre of a struggle over the future of London’s buses.
