CWU conference: Burslem

Issue No. 2155

Union reps and activists from the Burslem delivery office in Stoke-on-Trent who have been victimised by Royal Mail organised a well-attended fringe meeting to tell delegates about their case.

Seven of the 12 who were targeted by the company have returned to work in the office.

Earlier this year the National Appeals Panel (NAP) upheld the sacking of two CWU reps, while three others are awaiting their hearings.

Delegates were shocked to hear that the NAP had refused to consider specialist reports that pointed to manipulation of evidence.

Noel Mclean, speaking on behalf of the union’s postal executive, said that the case was critical as it centred on the right of union reps to be able to perform their role effectively.

He pledged the support of the union through employment tribunals and appeals.
