Defending union members in Carphone Warehouse

Issue No. 2155

Another theme at the conference was the CWU’s efforts to win new members in businesses outside of postal services and British Telecom, which provide the bulk of the union’s membership.

At Carphone Warehouse there is anger at mass redundancies combined with an attempt at union busting.

Midlands regional secretary Lee Baron told the conference that management at the firm were targeting union reps, using trumped up disciplinary charges to remove them from the workplace.

A union rep at the firm’s logistics centre in Preston said, “The future of this union lies in its ability to organise.”

Calling for the union to organise a national day of action outside all of Carphone Warehouse’s sites, He said, “We have to show workers everywhere that we can face up to the employers.”

Delegates gave their wholehearted backing to his proposal.
