Barrow academy faces protest

Issue No. 2156

Activists in Barrow, Cumbria, opposed to turning comprehensive schools into academies have called a protest on Friday of this week.

They are angry at plans to merge Alfred Barrow, Parkview and Thorncliffe schools into the planned Furness Academy, which would not be under local authority control.

The plans have sparked outrage among parents, students and workers at the schools. Campaigners have organised public meetings and

protests to stop the academy and students organised walkouts at some of the schools earlier this month.

The Barrow Parents Action Group Against Furness Academy has called the latest protest, set to be held in the Town Hall Square at 4pm on Friday.

Norlington School strike vote

Teachers in the NUT union at Norlington School in Leyton, east London, have voted to strike against plans for a trust school which would change their employer.

The date for the strike has not yet been announced.
