Journalist wins court battle

Issue No. 2157

Suzanne Breen, the Irish journalist who police pressured to reveal the identity of Real IRA members, won a massive victory for journalism and the NUJ union last week.

A Belfast court ruled that she did not have to reveal her sources after she had conducted the interviews for a story related to the death of two British soldiers in Northern Ireland in March.

She was supported by the NUJ and many journalists from across the world sent messages of support and flowers.

The NUJ says journalists should be free to protect their sources.
