US brutality in Afghanistan

by Siân Ruddick
Issue No. 2157

US-led coalition forces in Afghanistan have launched air strikes in the Helmand province as they try to secure bridges and river crossings to beat back the Taliban.

The Taliban has successfully resisted occupation forces in recent months and the death toll of both British and US forces has risen sharply.

This latest effort, Operation Panther’s Claw, was initiated in the immediate aftermath of a surge of US troops to the country.

President Barack Obama ordered the surge in the hope that it would change the fortunes of the doomed Nato occupation.

Aerial bombardment dramatically increases the number of civilians killed and fuels resistance to the brutal occupation among Afghan people.
