Open letter responses: 'An opportunity for the left'

by Ray Holmes, district councillor in Bolsover, Derbyshire
Issue No. 2158

‘Millions of people are out of work, despondent and extremely disgruntled. They are seeking a credible alternative to Labour and we must forge it for the sake of our children and grandchildren.

Construction workers are proving once again that workers are prepared to fight.

We on the left must support this surge and take Labour voters beyond the false promises of New Labour and capitalism.

It is time we set aside sectarianism and shoddy differences. It is time we put our joint weight behind the demands of working people and support their demand for justice and a fair deal.

We must support the actions of workers scarred by poverty, loss of pensions and repossession. Their suffering at the hands of a failing capitalist system must be brought to an end. This can only be done by the workers confident in the policies of unified left.

As an active socialist I recall the disappointment felt by many at the end of the Socialist Alliance. As someone elected as a Respect councillor I recall my disgust at its destruction.

Now, with the Socialist Workers Party’s open letter, we have a new opportunity to forge a political breakthrough.

A unified and collaborative left could restore working people’s belief in a political system that reflects and supports their hopes and expectations. So let’s build a left that will take us beyond the ideological constraints of New Labour.’
