TRADE UNIONISTS have a marvellous chance to come together to discuss and debate the crisis of political representation a few weeks after Christmas.
A Convention of the Trade Union Left is taking place. It is already winning wide backing across the trade union movement.
It will take place in London on Saturday 7 February.
The convention will see people who want an alternative to Labour and those who still hope to reclaim Labour come together to discuss vital issues of concern to every trade unionist. They include:
lWho should we vote for in the next election?
lWhat can we do about political representation?
lWhat should we do about trade unions’ political funds?
Among those addressing the convention are trade union general secretaries, including Bob Crow of the RMT rail union, Mark Serwotka of the PCS civil servants’ union and Paul Mackney of the Natfhe college teachers’ union.
George Galloway MP will also speak at the convention.
Important bodies in major unions have already sponsored the convention, and more are doing so each week.
They include the official London regional bodies of the Unison public sector workers’ union, the GMB general union and the firefighters’ FBU. The Department of Work and Pensions section of the PCS civil servants’ union is sponsoring the convention.
Both Essex and East Anglian regions of the FBU have sponsored the convention, as have both the Yorkshire and Humberside and the Western regional bodies of Natfhe.
The Tyneside engineering branch of the giant Amicus union is backing the convention, as are a number of branches of the post and telecom workers’ CWU union.
All these and the many other initial sponsors will be sending official delegates to join the debates.
If you haven’t already raised the convention at your union branch move quickly.
Most trade union branches and bodies meet monthly. Grab the chance for your branch to be represented at what will be one of the most vital gatherings of trade union activists for many years.
