Unite United Left meets in Manchester

by Mike Thompson
Issue No. 2158

Around 60 supporters of the United Left met in Manchester last Saturday at the first quarterly meeting of the left wing group in the Unite union.

The meeting took place against the background of significant victories in disputes involving Unite members, including Visteon, Linamar and the Lindsey Oil Refinery.

Unfortunately the meeting got bogged down discussing a number of internal issues – all of which are important – which pushed other items off the agenda.

One of the major issues facing Unite members will be the election for the union’s general secretary next year.

It was agreed that a hustings for the left candidate in this election would be held in Manchester in the first weekend of September.

It is vital that we build on the spirit of solidarity and collective action so that we can have a principled and winning campaign in the election across the union.
