Socialist Teachers Alliance AGM

Issue No. 2158

Around 40 people attended the annual general meeting of the Socialist Teachers Alliance (STA) in London on Saturday of last week. The STA is one of the main left organisations within the National Union of Teachers (NUT), and the one where supporters of Socialist Worker are active.

Economist Graham Turner opened the meeting, giving an overview of the economic crisis.

He spoke about the likelihood of an assault on our pay, pensions and conditions – whoever wins the next general election.

Kevin Courtney, who is the STA candidate for the deputy general secretary of the union, argued that we needed to prepare now for those battles.

The meeting agreed that STA members on the NUT executive would push for the union to add its weight to the demonstration called by the lecturers’ UCU union on 27 September at the Labour Party conference.

The meeting agreed to call a conference on “education for Liberation” in October, to put the case for an alternative vision of education to the sterile, market driven, league table obsessed one that is on offer now.
