Ordinary people are being told to “tighten their belts” – but the royal family increased its spending by £1.5 million last year.
In 2008 the queen splashed out £600,000 on garden parties alone. She also spent £500,000 on food, £700,000 on housekeeping and £400,000 on “ceremonial functions”.
The cost of the monarchy now stands at £41 million. But that figure does not include the cost of their expensive “security” – that bill is a secret.
