The UCU union branch at Nelson and Colne College has unanimously passed a resolution criticising management’s announcement of one, and possibly more, compulsory redundancies.
Some 57 lecturers attended the meeting.
We have lobbied the college’s management board and mounted a protest at the principal’s end of year speech.
The union has challenged the redundancy process by pointing out that management had not considered equality issues. Three of the five people who are at risk of losing their job are Muslims in a college with a very high proportion of Asian students.
Our persistent challenges have now stopped the process.
Other branches might want to consider this same challenge where appropriate.
The branch is now galvanized for further action and management knows that we will continue to fight for jobs and for real education.
lmanagement at Gorseinon College in Swansea have withdrawn the threat of compulsory redundancies after lecturers in the UCU voted to strike.
Over 72 percent of UCU union members voted to take action.
