Manchester strike for jobs

by David Swanson, UCU branch secretary, Manchester College
Issue No. 2159

Lecturers at Manchester College struck on Wednesday of last week in protest at 13 planned job cuts.

There was a very angry mood among strikers. We had pickets at most sites including a mass picket by 100 lecturers.

Lecturers marched to the city centre and held a protest at the town hall.

There is some unevenness in the college as a result of previous attacks, and at some sites many workers didn’t strike.

But there were still hundreds of lecturers taking part in the action.

We are now pushing for militant action to follow up the strike. Our union branch has voted to strike during enrolment and we will be taking action over the summer, including lobbies of governors’ meetings.

We are determined to show management that we are not going away.
