Contractor given longer to pay fine over site death

Issue No. 2160

Building contractor PC Harrington has been given longer to pay a £150,000 fine for the death of a worker on the Wembley construction site after a judge said that the contractor had been “very greatly affected by the downturn”.

PCH was handed the fine and ordered to pay more than £25,000 in costs in relation to the 2004 death of worker Patrick O’Sullivan.

However judge Martyn Zeidman said he had reduced the fine to ensure the company wasn’t forced “into liquidation” during the recession.

He also extended the payment period from three to 12 months.
