'Stop the Sats' barbecue in Birmingham

Issue No. 2161

More than 200 children, parents and teachers joined clowns and jugglers at the Stop the Sats barbecue organised by the Birmingham NUT teachers’ union last Saturday at Park Hill Primary School.

The barbecue was the latest part of the campaign by the NUT and the head teachers’ NAHT to get rid of Sats tests and the accompanying league tables for primary schools.

It follows a successful public meeting Birmingham NUT held with author Michael Rosen which saw 150 people come along to hear the case against Sats.

Birmingham NUT president Doug Morgan said, “Parents took leaflets and petitions away and vowed to take part in local stalls against Sats on 12 September and the demonstration at the Labour Party conference on 27 September.”

Birmingham NUT secretary Roger King said, “Schools should be places where children discover and question the world around them rather than spend six years of preparation for useless tests.”
