A motley collection of Holocaust deniers, antisemites, white supremacists and admirers of Adolf Hitler will gather for their annual hate-fest in the Derbyshire village of Codnor at the Red, White and Blue festival on Saturday 15 August.
The event is dismissed by many as a fringe event for people with fringe beliefs. But it is being organised by the British National Party (BNP), a Nazi party that is determined to build on its success at the recent European and council elections.
European Nazi parties will also attend.
The BNP plans to use the event to “harden up” members and begin to put into place its new strategy of creating “street activists” to work alongside its “respectable” electoral front.
Unite Against Fascism (UAF) has called a mass protest against the event.
BNP leader Nick Griffin has carefully crafted a strategy that tries to sell the Nazi party as “patriotic”. He has toned down the more overt antisemitism and racism of the BNP’s publications.
But he admits that this does not mean the party’s Nazi ideals have been “sold out”. He set out the party’s strategy at a meeting organised by the Ku Klux Klan in the US in 2000.
He told the gathering that, “there’s a difference between selling out your ideas, and selling your ideas.
“And the British National Party isn’t about selling out its ideas…but we are determined now to sell them. And that means basically to use the saleable words.
“Instead of talking about racial purity, we talk about identity.”
This involves wrapping themselves in the British flag and attempting to give voice to a “white identity”.
A recent investigation by the Centre for Social Cohesion has scratched at this veneer to show that racist ideas continue to flourish among BNP members and supporters.
It found that the Thurrock BNP branch’s YouTube channel features Nazi “music” with pictures of Griffin, Hitler and white supremacists.
The party’s online bookshop promotes books on “Jewish conspiracies” and works dedicated to “exposing” the Holocaust as an “evil hoax”.
But it is on blogs that BNP members and supporters feel most free to vent their hate.
One blog highlighted in the report is “Jew Watch UK”. The site aims to uncover the “Jewish conspiracy” to “destroy the white race”. Other blogs dream of a return to a mythical age of “white purity”.
The most notorious blog is Britain Awake. The author describes himself as a member of the BNP and says he will be attending the Red, White and Blue “family event”.
Britain Awake celebrated the recent attacks on Romanian families in Belfast saying, “good fucking riddance”.
When Diversity, a multiracial dance group, won the Britain’s Got Talent competition, the blog asked, “Why would anyone would want to watch a bunch of arrogant bastards poncing about, unless it was through the sights of a semi-automatic?”
But the blog saves its most evil bile for Weyman Bennett, joint secretary of UAF. After hearing of an attack on a black anti-racist campaigner the blog declared, “Wouldn’t it be great if it was that Weyman Bennett cunt who received the pasting!”
Lee Barnes is a head of the BNP’s legal team department. On another blog he spells out a strategy that allows Nazis to take the streets without compromising “electoral respectability”.
He argues that the National Front (NF), the forerunner of the BNP, should be reorganised to become the “nationalist organisational hub” of the party’s “street activists”.
Barnes writes, “The National Front is an organisation for those people who are street activists, not political activists.
“When it sticks to street activism it does a superb job.
“The BNP have no interest in seeking to return to street activism so the way is clear for the NF to become the primary organisation that organises and deploys those nationalists who are not interested in political electioneering.”
This strategy would allow those BNP members and supporters who are straining at the leash for “street activism” to let off steam.
The police warned recently that Nazis are planning a “spectacular event” against an ethnic minority community in Britain.
And Nazi do not shy from staging random racist attacks. A court in Liverpool recently jailed a BNP member for brandishing an imitation firearm to intimidate a black family.
Police also uncovered a far right network involving at least 32 people with access to 300 weapons and 80 bombs.
The Nazis are desperate to build this “street activism” to run parallel to the electoral organisation. This can only mean more racist attacks, intimidation and murder—and it makes the counter-demonstration by the UAF at the “Red, White and Blue” event all the more important.
