Tension growing over Iraq

Issue No. 2161

The US military is finding the Iraqi interpretation of its Status of Forces Agreement a little hard to swallow.

The deal, signed between the US and Iraqi governments last year, sets out the terms under which US troops can remain in Iraq.

One of the provisions of the pact is that US troops can enter urban areas without Iraqi permission.

Not so say the Iraqis.

Baghdad commander Colonel Ali Fadhil announced this week, “I feel that the American soldiers are frustrated.

“The American soldiers are in prison-like bases – as if they were under house arrest.”
