Jobs saved at Trinity Mirror after threat of action

Issue No. 2163

Members of the NUJ journalists’ union at Trinity Mirror’s West Midlands titles called off a strike set for Thursday of last week after securing an agreement meaning that there will be no compulsory redundancies.

The strike would have hit newspapers in Birmingham and Coventry.

Despite the agreement nine weekly titles, including the Walsall Observer, Lichfield Post, Tamworth Times and Solihull Times have been scrapped.

Some workers in Birmingham are taking voluntary redundancies.

In Coventry management agreed to redeploy three weekly paper reporters who had been facing redundancies.

Negotiations are continuing over the future of another reporter and a photographer.

Journalists working for Trinity Mirror in Newcastle and Middlesbrough are also balloting for action over cuts.
