Brummies to take on racists

Issue No. 2163

Unite Against Fascism (UAF) supporters in the West Midlands are to join forces with local Muslims in Birmingham city centre on Saturday of this week to protest against racist thugs who are planning to hold an “anti-Muslim demonstration” on that day.

The racist gathering has been organised by a group of football hooligans operating under the names “Casuals United” and the “English Defence League”.

Organisers include right-wing thugs linked to the fascist BNP and the event has been promoted on openly Nazi website Stormfront.

The English Defence League website was set up by Chris Renton, a Weston-super-Mare BNP activist.

Its supporters held a similar “protest” in Birmingham last month—which involved anti-Muslim slogans and racist songs.

This was followed by a spate of Nazi and BNP graffiti in the local area.

In May this year the same group ran rampage through Luton attacking Asians and Asian-owned businesses.

UAF Midlands organiser Sadia told Socialist Worker, “Lots of local people are determined to show these thugs that their vicious racism is not wanted. We are expecting a good turnout from local trade unions and the Muslim community.”

The counter-demonstration against the racists meets at 5pm, outside Waterstones, High Street, Birmingham.

Anti-fascists in Merseyside were set to protest against the BNP on Wednesday of this week outside Liverpool Crown Court.

The Nazi BNP has encouraged its members to turn out to support their member Peter Tierney, who is on trial for assault.

The Nazi BNP suffered an electoral setback last week after losing a council seat in a by-election in Brinsley in the East Midlands.

Brinsley is just five miles from Codnor, where the BNP is to hold its “Red, White and Blue” Nazi rally.

Labour picked up just 68 votes in an area that used to be a stronghold.
