Socialist Worker

Pot Full Of Soul

While New York at the end of the 1960s was a city electrified by political dissent, riots and cultural fusion, many second generation Peurto Ricans, like Bobby Marin, were busy combining an impromptu version of baseball with street corner crooning.

During breaks in play they sang songs and mixed traditional rhythms with the doo‑wop soul of singers like Jackie Wilson.

Some years later Marin decided that this sound ought to be recorded and he brought his old stickball team together with legendary latino artists, including Louie Ramirez.

The result is this fantastic, just rereleased, album of two minute tracks that run from vocal harmonies to super‑charged latin funk.

Perfect if you want to imagine what a real summer would look like.
