Youth workers revolt over cuts

Issue No. 2166

Youth and community workers in Coventry were set to protest on Wednesday of this week against drastic cuts in services for young people.

Around 80 full and part-time workers, who are in the Unite union, were due to strike on that day but the action was postponed.

The Tory-controlled council has already made £300,000 of cuts, hitting frontline services for children of primary age, after-school clubs and summer play schemes.

This has already led to 40 workers taking retirement, redundancy or redeployment.

The council now wants to implement a further £360,000 of cuts which will hit some of the most vulnerable young people in the city.
