John Lennon Airport workers come together to beat bosses

Issue No. 2167

Some 150 Servisair workers at Liverpool’s John Lennon Airport are on all-out strike.

The action by members of the GMB union was sparked by compulsory redundancies. It affects flights by Ryanair, KLM, Wizzair, Flybe and Thomson.

The company is forcing 51 staff to reapply for 27 jobs.

Firefighters could also now be balloted for action after bosses at Peel Airports, which owns Liverpool John Lennon, broke an agreement with them about conduct during the strike.

GMB organiser, Eddie Parker, said that people employed by Peel Airports had escorted “scab labour” onto the site.

He said the union would accept nothing but the withdrawal of all 24 compulsory redundancies.

Liverpool airport has already drafted in workers from Shannon, Dublin and Derry airports in an attempt to break the strike.

Peel Holdings is run by John Whittaker. According to the Sunday Times Rich List he is the 28th richest man in Britain and has a personal wealth of over £1.3 billion.
