“We won’t let racists or fascists divide us.” That is the message from Harrow, west London, in response to plans by racist thugs in the English Defence League (EDL) to hold an anti-Muslim protest at Harrow Central Mosque on Friday 11 September.
The EDL is a racist group whose organisers include right wing thugs linked to the fascist British National Party (BNP).
Its events have been promoted on the Nazi website Stormfront. And leading EDL activist Chris Renton from Weston super-Mare was one of those on the BNP membership list leaked last year.
The EDL has held a series of anti-Muslim protests recently. Its members went on the rampage in Luton earlier this year, attacking areas where many Asian people live.
Mass protests in Birmingham chased the EDL out of town last month.
Now the EDL is targeting the Harrow mosque, spreading smears about local Muslims.
Brent and Harrow Unite Against Fascism (UAF) has called what activists describe as a “dignified but determined protest” to counter the EDL.
The protest is backed by local union branches including Harrow NUT, Harrow College UCU and Unite branches at Harrow Wealde, Harrow and Edgware bus garages.
Sarah, one of the local UAF activists, told Socialist Worker, “If the EDL is allowed to march unopposed through Harrow they will cause trouble as they did in Luton.
“We have produced a statement of unity and it has gone down really well everywhere we have asked people to sign it.
“Local people are determined not to let the EDL stoke racism here.
“We went to speak to people at Friday prayers last week. They thanked us for being there and agreed we have to challenge these racist thugs.”
