THE FIRM that runs the Aldermaston nuclear weapons research plant was fined £17,500 last week for dumping radioactive waste into a nearby stream. Hunting Brae admitted in court that it had illegally started dumping water contaminated with tritium into the Aldermaston stream in April 1997.


THE CROWN Prosecution Service (CPS) is to be investigated by the Commission for Racial Equality because of allegations of racism. The investigation will look at both how the CPS decides who to prosecute and its own internal employment practices. It was the CPS which made the decision not to prosecute the white teenagers accused of murdering Stephen Lawrence.


HOME SECRETARY Jack Straw wants to rename the Probation Service to make it sound more 'tough', according to leaked government papers. It will be called the Community Rehabilitation and Punishment Service. Probation officers would become 'Community Rehabilitation and Punishment officers'. Jack Straw's new names have already been nicknamed 'craps' and 'crapo' by many offenders.
