Police protect racist demo

Issue No. 2168

Many people believe the police did nothing to stop the EDL from rampaging through Birmingham city centre.

David Hughes is the president of Birmingham TUC and witnessed the events on Saturday.

He said, “The EDL supporters emerged out of an alleyway throwing beer bottles and glasses. They were aiming at Asian youths and bystanders who had gathered at a nearby junction.

“Three police officers, who were no more than 20 yards from it, appeared to be content just filming it.

“I asked why they weren’t taking action. They said there were only three of them.

“When I pointed out that no more than 80 yards to our left there were three lines of maybe 120 police officers, they just shrugged their shoulders.”

Anne Cooper works at a branch of a well-known chain store in the area. She said that the police “sat back and watched these fascists rampage through our city”.
