The Sri Lankan government is expelling James Elder, a senior official in the United Nations Unicef children’s charity, after he spoke out against its treatment of Tamil civilians.
Elder recently warned that the approaching monsoon season will be disastrous for hundreds of thousands of Tamil civilians, who have been crammed into makeshift detention camps since the government military assault on Tamil areas ended in May.
The government denies accusations about conditions in the camps, but continues to deny NGOs and the media free access to them.
Elder has been given two weeks to leave the country.
