Solid First bus strikes continue

Issue No. 2171

More than 800 bus drivers in Bolton, Bury and Wigan held their fourth day of strike action on Monday of this week.

The drivers, in the Unite union, are fighting a pay freeze imposed by their bosses at First. Pickets at all the garages have been well-attended and determined throughout the dispute.

The strikes have had a big impact. In Bolton First runs about 70 percent of bus services. Union members are angry that First, which made £134 million in profits last year, is using the recession to attack pay.

Around 200 bus workers employed by First in Leicester have voted by 182 to 16 to move to a formal strike ballot against the company’s pay freeze. The workers include drivers, cleaners, supervisors and engineers in the Unite union.
