Anti-war movement builds for national demonstration

Stop the War activists are gearing up for a national demonstration to demand all British troops are withdrawn from Afghanistan.

The demonstration, in central London on Saturday 24 October comes at a time when already thin public support for the war is wearing away.

The number of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan has risen sharply in the last year, and continuing reports of civilian deaths and instability are shaking the establishment.

This is why it is vital that the movement descends on London to drive home their opposition.

Lindsey German, convenor of the Stop the War Coalition, told Socialist Worker, “Many people in Britain oppose the war and want to bring the troops home.

“They know that their children will pay the price of the war. While we are told that we will have to work longer to receive a pension, military and defence spending is not considered for cuts.”

Campaign meetings and rallies are being held in towns and cities across Britain.

Around 120 people packed into a hall in Doncaster on Tuesday of this week to hear Chris Nineham from Stop The War, George Galloway MP and Peter, a local man, whose son was killed in Iraq.

Full house

Doncaster activist John Westmoreland told Socialist Worker, “Our meeting was fantastic, and very mixed.

“We’re hoping to fill three coaches from Doncaster to the demo.

“Stopping the war is essential, not just to stop the loss of life, but to stem the tide of Islamophobia and put the money into decent services.”

Chris reports from York, “It was a full house at York Against the War’s latest public meeting as 50 people heard Elaheh Rostami-Povey demolish the myth that the war in Afghanistan is to help liberate women.

“The meeting was also a brilliant launch pad for the group’s activity leading up to the national demo.”

Across Britain, coaches are being booked and publicity pumped out. We need a huge demonstration to give a voice to the majority opinion that the war in Afghanistan needs to end immediately.

Bring the troops home demonstration Saturday 24 October, assemble 12 noon, Hyde Park, London. Called by Stop the War, CND and the British Muslim Initiative.
