Anti-academies fight in Hastings

Issue No. 2172

Anti-academy campaigners in Hastings are organising against plans to close three schools and replace them with two academies.

The academies would be sponsored by BT, Brighton university and the local council, and open in 2011.

“We’ve been leafleting schools to put the anti-academy case to parents,” Karen Mahon, education convenor for Sussex GMB southern region, told Socialist Worker.

“We now have a core group of people, including people from six trade unions.”

Activists were set to meet on Thursday to discuss next steps for the campaign.
