Johnnie Walker workers to ballot

Issue No. 2174

Workers at Johnnie Walker plants in the west of Scotland are to be balloted on strike action to save jobs.

Members of the Unite union are voting on industrial action in a consultative ballot that runs until 30 October.

The drinks giant Diageo plans to close its Johnnie Walker bottling plant in Kilmarnock and its distillery at Port Dundas, Glasgow, with a total loss of 900 jobs.

Jennie Formby, Unite national officer for the drink sector, accused Diageo of trying to “frighten Scottish workers into meek acceptance of savage cuts and plans which would ruin their communities”.
