Successful event begins Hands Off My Workmate campaign

Issue No. 2174

Around 150 people, including many migrant workers, attended the Hands off my workmate conference at the School of Oriental and African Studies (Soas) last Saturday.

The conference came after the ratcheting up of immigration raids on migrant workers, including one at Soas earlier this year.

Participants discussed resisting state attacks, taking up the struggles of migrant workers for justice and better pay, and related issues in plenaries and workshops throughout the day.

Speakers included victimised cleaner Juan Carlos Piedra, Green MEP Jean Lambert, professor Gilbert Achcar, Socialist Worker journalist Matthew Cookson, NUJ union general secretary Jeremy Dear, RMT union activist Clara Osagiede and many others.

Migrant workers also attended a legal briefing.

The RMT transport union has recently passed its support for a campaign for an amnesty for migrants in Britain.

Last Saturday’s conference voted to launch a campaign with an initial plan of action of circulating a statement to gain signatories, holding events and producing material.

An interim steering committee involving unions, MPs, activists, migrant workers and others was elected.
