Walkout at Crown Aerosols

by Richard Buckwell, secretary, Nottinghamshire Trades Council
Issue No. 2174

All 260 workers at Crown Aerosols in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, walked out on unofficial strike on Monday in support of suspended print union steward Andy Kirk.

The workers are mostly members of the Unite union, and the printshop makes up about a third of the workforce.

The Monday evening shift of printers walked out when they heard of the suspension, and sat in the canteen.

When the night shift came in they said, “We’re sitting here all night whether we’re paid or not.”

One worker said, “The lads here are all non-political. They’re Sun readers and that. But they all realised this was the last straw – trying to get rid of a respected union steward.”
