We are repeatedly told that the volume of mail that Royal Mail is handling is falling.
So why are we carrying more mail on our backs than ever before?
The two “facts” do not add up because managers are lying to us about the amount of traffic going through our offices.
We are told that the boxes we use should have about 150 items of mail in them, yet when I counted mine it had 306 items.
On this particular day we were told that our office handled 87,000 items.
But as I prepared my duty I counted all the letters and packets, and then multiplied that figure by the number of people on walking duties in the office.
The figure came out at 94,230 items.
My duty is an average round, and this total figure is over 7,000 more items than management are saying.
If I got all the drivers at the office to add their items too, the count would have been closer to 10,000 higher.
That just goes to show that all workers can expect from Royal Mail managers is a pack of lies.
