Sheffield bus drivers strike

Issue No. 2175

Around 750 drivers at First Bus in Sheffield struck for three days last week in a dispute over disciplinary and sickness procedures.

First is the biggest bus operator in Sheffield, so the strikes had a massive impact.

Unite branch secretary Martin Mayer said, “This collective grievance is in protest at the harsh disciplinary culture in place at Olive Grove depot.

“Too many drivers have been disciplined unnecessarily and awards are too severe, with final warnings and dismissals being a far too common occurrence.

“The standards expected by the company on sickness attendance, accidents and other conduct issues are unreasonable and unfair.”

Pickets were boosted by visits from local trade unionists and a large group of students, who made a banner supporting the strike.
