“We’ve got six weeks in which we can be really effective against Royal Mail and we can’t afford to waste a single one. We must escalate our action to win.”
So says senior CWU union rep Mark Batterham from Crick, Northamptonshire. He’s right.
Leaked Royal Mail documents published in Socialist Worker last week revealed that bosses want to string out negotiations until the peak Christmas period passes, and then renew their attack.
Mark says that if talks with the company fail, his members want to hit Royal Mail bosses hard.
“There must be no question of suspending our action without a decent deal, and we must now prepare to move from 24-hour strikes to 48 hours.
“Most of us here want to see all functions out on the same days.
“That will give us the opportunity for proper picket lines that we can ask every worker to respect.
“This is our moment and, as we get closer to Christmas, we’ve got to be prepared to seize it.
“We need to be ready to carry on escalating until we win.”
With workers in London and many other parts of Britain having already taken up to 17 days of action, it is vital that the union leadership shows the same level of commitment and announces a serious programme of action.
The best way to hit back would be to launch an all-out strike.
