Another Education is Possible conference

Some 120 students from across Britain came to the national Another Education is Possible conference in London last Saturday.

The conference brought together campaigners and student activists who have led fights against course closures, mass redundancies and tuition fees at their universities and colleges.

After the wave of occupations in solidarity with Gaza earlier this year, students have taken part in protests against the English Defence League and shown solidarity with the Vestas workers and striking post workers.

Workshops on stopping climate change, anti-fascism, the media, student unions and resisting war and imperialism gave activists the opportunity to share their experiences.

The speakers’ list featured names from all the major disputes.

Kathi Litschauer, an Austrian student from the occupied University of Vienna and a striking postal worker received the loudest rounds of applause.

Both emphasised the central importance of solidarity in any struggle.

The statement passed by conference said that the fight for another education must be linked to a fight for another world.

As youth unemployment has hit one million – and one in five young people are not in work or education, the conference passed to affiliate to the Right to Work Campaign.

It also issued a call for a demonstration in collaboration with the postal workers outside Lord Mandelson’s office.

As the recession bites and the bankers make off with their billions, universities are at the sharp end of the cuts. Not only is another education possible, it is more necessary than ever.
