Battling the trust at Norlington School

Issue No. 2177

Teachers in the NUT union at Norlington School in Waltham Forest, east London, began a three-day strike on Tuesday of this week.

They are fighting plans to transfer the school out of local authority control and transform it into a trust school.

The plans would impose a change of employer on the workers.

Teachers took two days of strike action in July against the plans before the headteacher, Jennifer Bax, resigned at the end of term.

The NUT opposes the government’s policy of converting community schools into privately-run trusts and academies.

It believes that schools, and those employed to work in them, should be democratically accountable to local authorities.
