Over 100 attend Education for Liberation conference

Issue No. 2178

More than 100 teachers attended the Education for Liberation conference in London last Saturday.

The event, organised by the Socialist Teachers Alliance, saw an impressive range of speakers and workshops discuss ideas in educational theory and practice.

Among those addressing the conference, or leading workshops, were authors Michael Rosen and Alan Gibbons, and leading radical education academics Meg Maguire, Jo Boaler, Ken Jones and Jane Coles.

What united the varied themes of an excellent day’s discussion was a desire to challenge what the recent Alexander report into primary education rightly dubs “state sponsored pedagogy”—the idea that there is a single state approved way to teach.

We need to deal with issues such as pay, conditions, workload and testing and challenge prevailing ideas about teaching approaches to build a serious left among teachers.
