Firefighters train up Palestinians

Issue No. 2179

The FBU firefighters’ union in the north west of England is helping to train a delegation of firefighters who are visiting from Palestine.

The eight firefighters are being trained at fire stations in Bolton, Manchester and Chorley, Lancashire.

The exchange comes after firefighters from Britain visited the town of Nablus, in the West Bank.

Moved by what they saw, they raised money to bring Palestinian firefighters over for the training.

Steve Harman, Lancashire FBU secretary, said, “Having been over to Nablus and witnessed the extreme difficulties the firefighters faced on a daily basis, I was humbled by the experience.

“They have never had any formal training, they have just trained themselves.”

Nablus has 72 firefighters for a population of 300,000, including four refugee camps.

The eight firefighters will become instructors and pass their skills on to the others once they are back in Palestine.
