UCU NEC elections

by Sean Vernell, UCU national executive
Issue No. 2183

Elections are coming up for the national executive committee of the UCU lecturers’ union. They come at a time when we are facing the biggest onslaught on post-16 education in decades.

Teachers and lecturers in further and higher education face increasing workloads and declining terms and conditions.

Now more than ever we need a union that will develop a national fightback to the onslaught.

UCU Left members have been at the forefront of organising effective action to defend pay, jobs and conditions. We have sought to promote a vision of education as a universal right and public service and have resisted the neoliberal agenda.

In many cases, UCU members have fought back and won. Members at Barnsley College fought back a major cuts programme while those at Tower Hamlets College in east London stopped all compulsory redundancies after four weeks of all-out strike action.

We need a union leadership that will build on these successes and argue for this kind of action across the sector.
